Redirect Strategy for Discontinued Ecommerce Products
Choose between keeping, redirecting, returning 404, or using 410 for unavailable products while protecting organic traffic and paid campaigns.
Products naturally go out of stock, but an unmanaged product URL can lose organic visits, backlink value, and advertising spend. A temporary stock issue does not always justify deleting the page, and a discontinued product should not automatically redirect to a broad category. Base the decision on whether the product will return, how closely alternatives match, and how much demand the URL still receives.
Keep the page for temporary unavailability
If the product will return, keeping the URL live is usually the best option. State the stock status clearly, offer a restock notification, and present relevant alternatives. The page should return 200 and continue to provide useful product information rather than displaying an empty shell.
Use 301 for a replacement model
When a product is permanently retired and clearly replaced by a new model, a 301 from the old URL to the successor is meaningful. A main product page may also fit retired color or minor variants. The destination must satisfy the original expectation; do not redirect to an unrelated product merely because it is available.
Use category redirects carefully
When no exact alternative exists, a narrow and relevant category can help the shopper compare options. Sending every discontinued product to a broad top-level category weakens intent and increases soft 404 risk. Evaluate product type, brand, collection, and price segment together.
When 404 or 410 is appropriate
If no alternative exists and the page will not return, use 404 or consider 410 for an intentional permanent removal. When the URL still receives valuable traffic or backlinks, first consider whether a genuinely useful archive page can serve the visitor. Do not keep a thin artificial page solely to preserve rankings.
Do not forget ads and feeds
A redirect does not replace campaign maintenance. Update destinations in Google Ads, Meta campaigns, product feeds, email automations, and social posts. no404 referrer and event data exposes legacy product paths that continue to receive clicks, allowing redirect work and campaign cleanup to share one priority list.
